EPR – Epistemological Profile Radar: A Diagnostic Tool for Cognitive Alignment in Interdisciplinary Research

The EPR – Epistemological Profile Radar was designed and developed as part of the postdoctoral research project entitled “The Role of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary Research and the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools in Addressing Epistemological and Meaning-Related Challenges.” It is the first in a series of digital philosophical tools designed to facilitate collaboration among researchers from different scientific disciplines and support interdisciplinary knowledge integration.

You can use the tool to generate your personal epistemological profile and compare it with those of other members of your research team through the following link:

The EPR is designed for use at the initial stage of interdisciplinary collaboration and is particularly useful for early-career researchers, doctoral candidates, and postgraduate students. It identifies points of convergence and divergence in the initial epistemological stances and assumptions that researchers bring to a joint research project. Beyond improving collaboration, the tool contributes to the development of epistemological self-awareness and the capacity for self-regulated adaptation to the demands of interdisciplinary research.

The tool operates by asking users to indicate their degree of agreement or disagreement with a series of statements addressing fundamental issues in the philosophy of science, organised into eight epistemological variables. Completing the questionnaire takes approximately 15 minutes.

There are no right or wrong answers. The purpose is to map users’ initial epistemological stances, allowing both the comparison of individual profiles and the assessment of each profile's position relative to the reference range defined by the Epistemic Virtue Index (EVI). This functional index was introduced as part of the research to assess the extent to which particular epistemological stances may facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration.

Upon completion, a personalised graphical representation is automatically generated and sent to the user's email address, together with additional information.

The EPR results can also be exported in a digital format suitable for integration with AiPi (Artificial Intelligence Principal Investigator), a specialised AI assistant designed to support the analysis and further processing of epistemological profiles.

Profiles generated by the tool are used exclusively for statistical purposes, and users’ personal data remain confidential. Users may also choose to share their personalised charts through a dedicated link.

Finally, the various components of the EPR are subject to continuous evaluation and refinement. Feedback from the academic and research community is therefore particularly valuable for the tool's further development and improvement.
