Presentation of the Edited Volume Cognition and Consciousness in Animals

01-07-2026 12:03

On Friday, June 26, 2026, the edited volume Cognition and Consciousness in Animals, conceived and edited by Dr. Alkis Gounaris, was presented during the graduation ceremony of the Interinstitutional Master's Programme Animals: Ethics, Law, and Welfare, where Dr. Gounaris serves as a member of the teaching staff.

The volume is the outcome of an original academic initiative, bringing together research contributions by students and graduates of the programme. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, it explores fundamental philosophical and scientific questions concerning animal cognition and consciousness, while also highlighting the ethical implications of understanding other species. During the presentation, three contributing authors—Panagiota Tsirimokou, Katerina Milioti, and Stella Dasiou—shared their experiences of participating in the project and reflected on the process of research, writing, and publication.

The publication highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and demonstrates how postgraduate education can make a meaningful contribution to the production and dissemination of new scientific knowledge.

The edited volume is freely available as an open-access publication through the National Documentation Centre (EKT) digital publishing platform: https://ebooks.epublishing.ekt.gr/index.php/aprl/catalog/book/266
