Abstract: Life in the second half of the chessboard is expected to be exciting and scary at the same time. New challenges and opportunities will soon give prominence to new masters of the game, new services, new products, new lifestyles –and we will all adapt and embrace these developments, making them an integral part of our daily lives, just about as we did in the past with cars, mobile phones and the internet.
At the same time, developments that we cannot yet envision in technological research, government organization, defense and surveillance will radically change power balances in the world map. It is very likely that we will have to address the novel ethical, legal and institutional issues that will arise retrospectively. Technology is evolving faster than institutions, and people have an inherent tendency to act first and think about the consequences later. The chance of losing control in the second half of the chessboard is high, but for the moment we can still cope with the situation. Being informed of what's coming is the beginning.
With this in mind, we have chosen to concisely present six books that focus on this issue, attempting, each from its own point of view, both to accurately describe it and to suggest possible solutions and further reflections on developments in the near and distant future in matters of economics, education, institutions, the conquest of space, the transcendence of human nature and possibly the overcoming of mortality.
